This was a live sports photography role centered around documenting an Old Glory DC matchday. Unlike a controlled shoot, the work depended on anticipation, timing, movement, and the ability to react quickly to unpredictable moments on the field.
My goal was to create a photo set that felt useful for both team storytelling and social media — a mix of high-impact action shots, emotional player moments, crowd details, and atmosphere images that could help the match feel bigger than the final score.
Old Glory DC vs CA Legion — Matchday Coverage
Rugby moves quickly, and the best moments often happen with very little warning. The challenge was staying ready for contact, runs, celebrations, and emotional reactions while also paying attention to the environment around the field.
"Capturing enough variety for a strong gallery while still being intentional about composition, focus, and storytelling."
Because I was shooting in a live match setting, I had to balance speed and selectivity: capturing enough variety for a strong gallery while still being intentional about composition, focus, and storytelling.
I approached the match as a full story rather than only an action sequence. While gameplay was the main focus, I also looked for moments before, during, and after the action that added context to the event.
The final set was built around three types of images: action, emotion, and atmosphere. Action shots captured the physicality of rugby. Emotional moments showed player reactions and team energy. Atmosphere images helped frame the matchday experience through fans, sideline details, and the environment around the game.
The action images focused on the speed, contact, and intensity of rugby. I looked for clean compositions where the body movement, ball position, and player expression helped make the moment readable.
The emotion-focused images captured reactions, celebrations, focus, and smaller human moments that gave the set more depth beyond the play itself.
The atmosphere images helped show the matchday environment — fans, team presence, sideline energy, and the details that make the event feel alive.
The final gallery created a complete visual record of the matchday, balancing athletic action with emotion and environment. This work strengthened my ability to shoot live sports with speed, accuracy, and storytelling in mind.
It also gave me experience delivering a polished sports photo set that could be used across team media, social content, and promotional storytelling.
